Malefactor (With real Transport Sphincter!) Digital Sculpt

In continuing with my Epic-scale retro sculpts, I've been eyeing the Malefactor for a while - first, because it has cool curving arms, second, because though it doesn't have an modern equivalent, I think it's completely reasonable to run it as a Tervigon!

Both serve a similar role in the Hive fleet, carrying broods into battle. And, moreover, I need a character to lead my Retro Tyranid army as a Warlord - my Winged Hive Tyrant leads the Tyrant Mechanicus, but I don't currently one to run the army separately. I also considered a Hive Tyrant (And there is a high chance I sculpt one eventually) but I though I'd diversify my army, and make a cool model.

As always - concept art. I found pics of the Armorcast version, and also the Epic miniatures. I also managed to find some card art from the Warhammer Collectible Card Game on Lexicanum, with a really cool wriggling lamprey-like mouth. I also brought in inspiration from the Trilobite beetle and the Zerg Infestor. I felt that the creature slugging across the ground didn't make sense, especially since the original creature was supposed to be very fast. In my concept doodles, I took the base of six limbs that most tyranids have, and reconfigured them so their fingers are carrying the creature. Hopefully this comes through on the sculpt! Also, I wanted to add the "Transport Sphincters", where the creatures disembark - but I didn't want to make it too... explicit.

Then I got to a-sculpting! This one's been on my todo-list for a very long time, but I just sat down and sculpted it all in two sittings. The repeating elements of the armor, both on the back and the front "arms" made these go very quickly. I did manage to make some really good looking transport teeth holes (what a fun sentence) and the under-limbs turned out really cool!

Here's some detail renders of the parts as well.

You may download the STL files for this sculpt here!

Tyranid Malefactor

I'm really excited to get this one printed and painted up for the tabletop, it's going to be my warlord Tervigon for the Primeval Behemoth, which means I can start running a 100% retro army! Thanks for reading
