Epic-Scale Heirophant Weapons and Final Painting

Like I mentioned in the previous Epic-Scale Heirophant post, I had to start over with my weapons after having made some mechanical versions. I pivoted, deciding to instead make something a little more faithful to the Epic scale model, and thus also beginning my Retro Tyranid army. Thus, I needed to fabricate a Razor Claw and a Biocannon.

I began with yanking off the arm off of the previously built robot version of the claw. It had good shape. I then tacked on chunks of insulation foam, carving these and melting them to give them that serrated shape. I probably should have sculpted some more carapace details using clay, but oh well.

For the Biocannon (which I, being a very silly bear, forgot to take any pictures of) I began with a plate of foamcore board, the kind used for posters and school presentations. I cut out a rough outline, then globbed on hot glue layering up a rough shape. I then glued some currogated paper - one of the most useful building materials I have - along the sides, and some bendable drinking straws cut in half to get that ribbed look along the weapon. Finally, I layered strips of that Model Magic clay I talked about in the last post on top, to sculpt a few minor details onto the weapon. Once that dried, I drilled an arm hole and muzzle hole, then attached both arms to the creature! And upright, like they are supposed to be.

You'll also notice the whole critter has a new paint scheme, too. After I finished the previous version, I found myself annoyed with it being much more grounded and realistic (relatively) than I intended. I had been targeting retro Tyranid paint schemes like this - very bright and cartoony.

But I don't think I nailed that the first time. So I started over, and followed along with several videos, and adapting them to craft paints (Because I am not wasting that much nice paint on a model this size). And I think it turned out much closer! I'm so excited to plunk this monster on the table and have my enemies run in terror from it's titanic might.

Now that that monster of a project is finished up, I'm excited to undertake a new one, too! I was looking over the list of Bio-Titans on Lexicanum, and there were ones there I've never heard of before, and would love to put onto the table. I was also looking over that classic list of Epic scale Tyranids, and they look pretty appealing too. We'll see where I go next!

Thanks for reading!
